PROGRAM: JAMES BASSLER
James Bassler, textile artist and professor, is a maker to his core. In the 1950s, he traveled through the Middle East and Asia. In India, he was captivated by the logic of the weaving processes of local artisans, and weaving became his life’s work. From 1975 to 2000 he taught textile art at UCLA. His extraordinary art tapestries are prized by collectors; his work is represented in the collections of the American Craft Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the North Dakota Museum of Art, Oakland Museum of Art, Cotsen American Masters Textile Collection, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and Long House Reserve. He was named to the American Craft Council College of Fellows in 1998.
